. >> reporter: good morning, here in st. joseph missouri, north of kansas city know drifts are really starting to form from all of the snow and strong winds that are blowing through the midwest and we now know these conditions are causing interstates to close. the fierce storm sweeping across the nation's mid section is unleashing everything from snow to lightning and thunder. >> yeah! >> reporter: it's expected to impact at least 16 states a wintry end to a mild december. >> we need the moisture. i'll take all the snow we can get right now. >> reporter: and it looks like they'll get it. in nebraska forecasters are calling for several inches of snow while parts of iowa and wisconsin could be buried in more than a foot. residents are trying to get an early jump on the sidewalks. >> three inches on the ground snow blowers, it's heavy and wet. >> reporter: tens of thousands in iowa are already without power. on the roadways, the mix of snow and whipping wind is making for dangerous driving conditions. the storm isn't sparing aire inginge inging air travelers either.

. just 22 minutes out of novado into the city. james? >> san francisco firefighters battled an early morning fire in the noe valley neighborhood. the fire broke out around two a-m. in the 14-hundred block of sanchez street near 27th street. it was contained about 15 minutes later. no word yet on how bad the damage was or if there were any injuries. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. >> police are continuing to investigate materials that were found stored in a san mateo home. police and fire officials detonated the materials found in the home in the 400 block of parrott drive. authorities say the materials were not stable to move without potential of explosion and evacuated the block while warning other residents. the san mateo county bomb squad was also called into the scene. >> there were a lot of chemicals. we were concerned after we spoke with the sheriff's office, there was ether and an asset that had to be taking care of on-site it was too dangerous to transport. and in acid. >> you felt the explosion and you felt the shock. the neighbors across the street could

fall is blowing all over the place. winds gusting to 50 in omaha, 47 in wichita and kansas city, the winds are picking up for you, too, as you're starting to get bands of snow on backside. who's going to get additional snow out of this? we're mostly talking another 6 to 10 inches possible from the dubuque area, madison and green bay. milwaukee and chicago, a little too warm. on the backside of this late today you'll get a quick burst of snow yourselves. you may pick up an inch or two. when that happens, the temperatures plummet and we'll get freezing around the road. on the south side of the thunderstorm this morning, a tornado warning north of jackson, mississippi. we're watching the deep south, mostly mississippi, alabama for severe thunderstorms and eventually those storms work their way towards atlanta. for the east coast, much of this morning's drive is just fine. tomorrow morning, it will not be a pretty scene, even areas such as philly, d.c. and new york. >>> the fbi is offering a $50,000 reward for these escaped chicago bank robbers. jose banks, that's his name and kenne

today. more than 200 firefighters, many from new york city, stood at attention outside the service for daniel barden, the 7-year-old who wanted to grow up to be one of them. >> as a firefighter, even more as a parent, it's just -- it's very upsetting that, you know, these young kids had their lives taken away from them so early. they had so much more to live for and so much more to give to the world. >> reporter: today, once again, parents doing something we never expect to do for our children, eulogize them. daniel described as "such a light, always smiling, unfailingly polite." in his mother's words, he was "just so good." also laid to rest, 27-year-old teacher victoria soto, who saved so many of her students. her sister, jillian, said, "you have been a hero to me for a lot longer than five days. you've been my big sister, the one i always looked up to." also on hand, music legend and family friend, paul simon, who sang one of soto's favorite songs -- "the sound of silence." and, in the midst of all the funerals that took place today, the kids who got a chance to visit their new
